How to turn your thermostat off

<= Back

If you plan on leaving your home for an extended period of time, you can simply set your Nest Thermostat to Off to stop all heating and cooling unless your Safety Temperatures are reached. If you want to keep your system from coming on no matter what, you can also disable Safety Temperatures.

If you’re just leaving for the day, a short trip, or you just want to help save energy, simply let your thermostat automatically switch to Eco Temperatures to help save energy when you leave home. This way, your home should be more comfortable when you come back than if you had turned your system off.

If you’re going on vacation, or nobody is going to be home for an extended period of time, you can set your Nest Thermostat to Off to prevent it from turning on heating or cooling unless the temperature in your home reaches the Safety Temperatures you have set.

To completely shut off your home’s heating and cooling system with the Nest Thermostat so that it never turns on, even if temperatures reach extreme levels, you’ll also need to disable your Safety Temperatures before setting your Nest Thermostat to Off.

How to set your Nest Thermostat to Off mode:

You should set your thermostat to Off when leaving your home for extended periods of time if you want your Nest Thermostat to help you save energy. Using Off mode can help save energy and prevent possible damage to your home by respecting your Safety Temperatures.

On your Nest thermostat:

– Press the thermostat ring open the Quick View menu.
– Turn the ring to Thermostat  and press to select.
– Select Off  and press the ring. that says Off.

Your Nest thermostat screen should now change to say Off.

With the Nest app:

– Tap your thermostat on the app home screen.
– Tap the Thermostat  icon.
– Select Off .

Your Nest Thermostat screen should now change to a screen that says Off.

Your thermostat will now only turn on your heating or cooling when your home reaches your Safety Temperatures.

How to disable Safety Temperatures to completely stop heating and cooling:

Important: Your Nest Thermostat uses Safety Temperatures to help prevent damage to your home when it gets too hot or too cold. When the Safety Temperatures are disabled, your thermostat can’t help prevent your home from reaching these dangerous temperatures.

You can disable your Safety Temperatures in the Equipment menu on your thermostat or with the Nest app. For detailed instructions, see the article linked below.

How Safety Temperatures work:

Once your Safety Temperatures are disabled you can set your Nest Thermostat to Off following the steps in the section above. Once you’ve done that, your thermostat won’t turn on heating or cooling no matter how hot or cold it is in your home.
