How to restart your Detect or reset it to factory defaults

<= Back

If Nest Detect ever becomes unresponsive, has connection issues, or isn’t working normally, you can restart it by holding down the button until the light ring turns blue. There’s also an option to reset your Detect to factory defaults, which deletes all settings and disconnects it from Nest Guard.

If you simply restart Detect, it will refresh its connection with Nest Guard. This may help fix any connection issues it might be having.

On the other hand, if you reset Detect to factory defaults, it will erase all settings and your Detect will appear as Offline in the Nest app unless you install it again. We don’t recommend resetting Nest Detect to factory defaults unless you need to. For example, you might be asked to do this if you’re sending Nest Detect to us for a repair.

See the steps below to learn how to restart Detect by pressing its button or taking out its battery, or learn how to reset it to factory defaults.

How to restart Detect:

Restarting Detect doesn’t erase any settings. After restarting, Detect will automatically try to connect to the same Guard and resume looking for activity as it was before.

– Make sure Nest Secure is set to Off . Otherwise, the alarm will sound when you try to restart Detect.

– Press and hold Detect’s button for about 10 seconds. When the light ring pulses blue, release the button.

– Detect will reset itself and automatically try to connect to Guard again.

– Check your Detect with the Nest app to make sure it’s working normally. If it’s having trouble, the app will tell you.

– If you disarmed Nest Secure earlier, remember to arm it again.

If that didn’t solve your issue, see the next section about restarting Detect by taking out its battery.

If resetting doesn’t work, try taking out Detect’s battery

Taking out the battery is another quick way to solve many common issues. It won’t erase any settings, and Detect will automatically try to reconnect to Guard after you’re done.

– Make sure Nest Secure is set to Off . Otherwise, the alarm will sound when you try to take out Detect’s battery.

– Pull Detect out of its backplate.

– Take out Detect’s battery and put it back in.

– Snap Detect back into its backplate.

– Detect will automatically try to connect to Nest Guard again. Check your Detect with the Nest app to make sure it’s working normally. If it’s having trouble, the app will tell you.

– If you disarmed Nest Secure earlier, remember to arm it again.

How to reset Detect to factory defaults:

Resetting Detect to factory defaults will disconnect it from Nest Guard, and it will stay disconnected unless you use the Nest app to install it again. However, resetting will not automatically remove it from your account, so you will still see it listed in the Nest app.

You should only reset your Detect to factory defaults if:

– You’re selling or giving it to someone else who will add it to their own account in the Nest app.

– You previously removed it from your account in the Nest app, but now you want to add it back to the same account.

– You want to completely start over and re-install your Detect from the beginning.

-Make sure Nest Guard is set to Off . If you don’t, the alarm will sound when you try to reset Detect to factory defaults.
– Press and hold Detect’s button for about 15 seconds. The light ring will pulse blue, then it will pulse yellow. When it starts to pulse yellow, release the button.

Note: After you release the button, the light will glow solid yellow for several seconds. If you need to cancel the reset, press the button again while the light is pulsing.

– When the light stops pulsing, Detect will reset itself to factory defaults.

– If you disarmed Nest Secure earlier, you can now arm it again.

When reset to factory defaults, Detect’s light will pulse blue. It will no longer look for activity in your home, and will be Offline in the Nest app. Or, if you’ve already removed it from your account, it won’t appear there at all.

To add it back after removing it: If you previously removed Detect from your account in the Nest app, but now you want to add it back to the same account, you’ll need to use the Nest app to go through installation again.

To start over and re-install it: If you want to completely start over and set up Detect as if it were new, you’ll need to remove it from your account and then add it back in the Nest app. First, look up how to remove a nest product from your account in the configure section of the Nest App section.

Next, use the Nest App to add it back to your account
