Sonos is compatible with iTunes playlists as well as M3U, WPL and PLS playlist files created with third-party software, such as WinAmp and Windows Media Player. Sonos does not allow you to change or edit music and playlist files created by other applications; these files are always treated as “read-only.”
|Please Note: If your playlists are missing and you’re using iTunes 12.2 or greater, skip to the section below.
Sonos imports your playlists when you share the music folder. If you haven’t shared the Music folder on your computer yet, follow these steps:
Using the Sonos app for Mac or PC:
– From the menu bar at the top of your screen click Manage then Music Library Settings.
On a Mac, click the + (plus) button
On a PC, click the Add button
– Depending on where your music is stored, select In my Music folder or In another location on my computer, or an external drive connected to my computer.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete adding your music folder.
– Once the process is complete, click Music Library > Imported Playlists from the Sonos music pane to view and play your playlists.
If your playlists are still missing after sharing your Music folder:
Your playlist file is stored somewhere on your computer that is not your Music folder. You’ll need to find the location of the playlist file, and share the folder path with Sonos.
– Playlists have an .XML, .PLS, .M3U or .WPL file extension. (e.g., iTunes Music Library.xml)
– Once you locate the folder your playlist is stored in, share that folder with Sonos as well.

If you’re using iTunes 12.2:
Open iTunes and Preferences.
On Mac: From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose iTunes > Preferences.
On PC: Hold down the Control and B keys on your keyboard to enable the iTunes menu bar. Then click Edit > Preferences.
– Click the Advanced tab.
– Make sure Share iTunes Library XML with other applications is checked.
– Update the music library index in Sonos.
– Browse to Music Library > Imported Playlists from the Sonos music menu to view and play your playlists.
Checking the Share iTunes Library XML with other applications will make iTunes create a playlist file that Sonos can read.
Duplicate iTunes playlists showing up in Sonos:
Any duplicate playlists that are seen are usually the result of multiple iTunes playlist files being indexed by Sonos across one or more Music Library shares. iTunes playlists are stored in a file called “iTunes Music Library.xml” or “iTunes Library.xml.”
If you find that you have duplicate iTunes Music Library XML files, take a look at the timestamps, or last modified date of the playlist files, and make sure only the most recently updated XML file remains in the folder.
After removing the deprecated XML file, be sure to update the music library index in Sonos to remove the old playlists from showing in Sonos.
Large iTunes Playlists:
If you have more than 40,000 songs in your iTunes playlists:
Sonos can index a maximum of 1,000 playlists, with up to 40,000 songs total within all of your iTunes playlists. If you have exceeded this limit there will be missing playlists or songs within playlists when viewing them in Sonos.
