Setting up surround sound with Sonos home theater speakers

<= Back

You can easily bond two Sonos One, PLAY:1, PLAY:3 or PLAY:5 (gen2) speakers with a Playbar, Playbase, or Beam to function as left and right surround channels in your Sonos home theater experience. If you’re setting up your home theater speaker and surround speakers all at once, you’ll be prompted by the Sonos app to initiate a home theater setup. If your home theater speaker is already set up and you’ve just purchased surrounds, follow the steps below to add them. You can also bond a SUB with the home theater speakers to add to your cinematic experience.

General guidelines

– Make sure the Sonos products that you want to serve as surrounds are the same model. You cannot combine a PLAY:1 and a PLAY:3 to function as surround speakers, or add a single speaker to achieve surround sound.

– Be sure to follow these instructions to set up your surround speakers. Do not create a room group or stereo pair as these will not achieve the left and right surround channel functionality.

– The PLAY:3 and PLAY:5 (gen2) can be positioned vertically or horizontally. When setting these speakers up as surrounds, ensure both are set up in the same orientation – either both vertical or both horizontal.

– Place the surround speakers to the left and right of your main viewing position, level with or behind the main viewing position as shown in the image below.

– Please note that Line-In and the Subwoofer Output are disabled on the PLAY:5 (gen2) and CONNECT:AMP when they are used as surround speakers with the Playbar, Playbase, or Beam.
